The winter months can leave a toll on our skin, the freezing cold temperatures compounded with central heating on full blast means our skin is often stripped of its natural moisture and oils leading to our skin feeling dry, dull and dehydrated, while skin conditions such eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis are often exacerbated.

Drink plenty of water
The cheapest skincare savior you will find, yet so often avoided. Water is essential to keeping our skin hydrated by replenishing skin tissue and elastin and subsequently helping to delay wrinkles and the offset of ageing. Water also flushes out toxins and waste in the body, leading to clearer skin and a higher metabolic rate. Skincare aside, water is also vital in the longevity of your treatments, so make sure to drink at least eight glasses a day.
Remove make up and cleanse every night
Overnight is the crucial time that your skin repairs itself after a full day of being exposed to potentially damaging chemicals, pollution, sun and wind, therefore it’s important to make sure you let your skin breathe overnight. Removing your make up prevents your pores being clogged up with make up and grime which will lead to breakouts, so make sure to remove your make up with your trusted cleanser every night.
Moisturise and Exfoliate
This goes without saying – cold air will strip your skin of its natural moisture and oils which means a good quality moisturiser is essential to keeping your skin hydrated, smooth and supple. Make sure to find a moisturiser that is suitable for the skin type you have and preferably to be made of all natural ingredients.
Make sure to gently exfoliate your skin at least three times a week before applying moisturiser. Exfoliating not only helps kick start collagen production, but it also scrubs away dead skin cells allowing your moisturiser to penetrate deeper into your skin surface and properly absorbed fully into your skin.
Don’t crank up the heat too much
The cold mornings certainly make it easier to turn the heat up and spend an extra few minutes in the shower, however this rookie mistake is actually causing havoc on your skin. The high temperature and evaporation of water off your skin once out of the shower can cause your skin to become drier as it disrupts the skin of its natural moisture. Instead, opt for a 10 – 15 minute long lukewarm showers and apply your moisturiser to your still-damp skin to lock in moisture.
Come rain or shine… wear SPF
Sun damage can have a detrimental impact on our skin and speeds up the natural ageing process and decreases the stimulation of elastin, leading to sagging skin, wrinkles and dark spots. The sun emits harmful UV rays all year round, regardless if the snow is falling outside, wearing an SPF is an every day, for the rest of your commitment which will protect your skin from fine lines and premature ageing. Nowadays, you can find SPF in moisturisers and make up products making application easy but absolutely necessary.
