Profhilo Structura has been developed specifically with these deeper age-related changes in mind.
When we talk about facial ageing, the conversation often centres around the skin. Fine lines appear, collagen levels decline and skin gradually becomes less firm. But the skin is only part of the story.
Some of the changes we associate with looking older actually happen beneath it. Over time, the superficial fat compartments that help give the face its natural shape and support can change too. This can leave the cheeks looking flatter, create areas of hollowing and alter the overall contours of the face. Profhilo Structura has been developed specifically with these deeper age-related changes in mind.
What happens to facial structure as we age?
A younger face isn’t simply a face without wrinkles. Its appearance is influenced by the relationship between skin, fat, muscle and bone, all of which change as we get older. One particularly important change occurs within the facial fat compartments. Rather than existing as one continuous layer, facial fat is organised into different compartments. These contribute to the softness, contours and proportions of the face. With age, these compartments can change in volume and position. The result can be a gradual loss of support through areas such as the cheeks and mid-face, with features beginning to look flatter, more hollow or less defined. This is why treating the skin alone isn’t always enough.
What is Profhilo Structura?
Profhilo Structura is an injectable treatment from IBSA, the makers of Profhilo, developed specifically to address age-related changes within the superficial facial fat compartments. It uses a highly concentrated formulation of hyaluronic acid and is designed to support the tissues beneath the skin through a process of bioremodelling.
The important distinction is that Profhilo Structura isn’t designed to simply fill an area or create a new facial shape. Instead, the aim is to work with the patient’s existing anatomy, helping to restore support and improve the natural balance of the face. For the right patient, the result can be a face that appears fresher and subtly more supported without looking obviously treated.
Profhilo Structura isn’t the same as Profhilo
Despite sharing a name, the two treatments shouldn’t be confused. Traditional Profhilo is primarily associated with improving skin quality. It is used to deeply hydrate the skin while improving characteristics such as firmness and elasticity. Profhilo Structura has a different focus. It works at a deeper level, targeting the superficial facial fat compartments that contribute to facial shape and support.
The right choice therefore depends on what is actually causing the changes you can see. If the primary concern is skin quality, Profhilo may be appropriate. If changes beneath the skin are contributing to flattening, hollowing or loss of support, Profhilo Structura may be considered instead. And sometimes, facial ageing involves several different layers at once.
Is Profhilo Structura an alternative to dermal filler?
Not necessarily, because the treatments have different purposes. Dermal fillers can be used very precisely to restore volume, improve proportions or support particular areas of the face. In experienced hands, they remain an extremely useful treatment. Profhilo Structura isn’t intended to replicate this. Its appeal lies in a different approach to facial rejuvenation: supporting age-related tissue changes without deliberately creating projection or altering individual features.
For patients who are beginning to notice that their face looks slightly flatter, more tired or less supported but don’t necessarily want additional volume, this can make Profhilo Structura particularly interesting.
Treating the face, not the trend
There is no single treatment for facial ageing because there is no single ageing process. Two patients of the same age can present completely differently. One may primarily have changes in skin quality and collagen, while another may have maintained good skin but experienced greater changes in facial volume and support. This is why consultation matters.
At Newcastle Skin Clinic, we assess the face as a whole before recommending treatment. That means looking beyond an individual line or area and considering skin quality, facial structure, proportions and the changes occurring beneath the skin. Profhilo Structura gives us another way to address one of those layers.
It may be used as a standalone treatment or form part of a wider, personalised treatment plan where several aspects of facial ageing are being addressed. The objective remains the same: to help you look fresher and more naturally supported, without changing the characteristics that make your face yours.
Is Profhilo Structura right for you?
Profhilo Structura may be worth considering if you’ve begun to notice changes such as flattening through the cheeks, hollowing, reduced facial support or a generally more tired appearance. However, these concerns aren’t always caused by the same thing. A full facial assessment allows us to identify what has actually changed and recommend the treatment, or combination of treatments, most appropriate for your individual anatomy.
